When it comes to your own skin troubles, you probably have a go-to routine for dealing with whatever comes up. But when it comes to your baby's skincare, you might be a bit more hesitant to go trying a range of different products. You'll start wondering: will this irritate baby's sensitive skin more? Is it safe and natural? How do I even know what skin type my baby has?

Not to worry, mama, this is where Mustela comes in.

Mustela has long been a company dedicated to child skin health and using safe, effective, and natural ingredients in their products. With over 60 years of dermatological expertise in skincare for babies and children - they are some of the top experts on the subject. They have a dedicated Baby Skin Type initiative that will help you answer all of your infant skincare questions and help you better understand your baby's unique skin type and exactly how to treat it.

You may be thinking–wait, my baby has a skin type already? The answer is yes! And starting from day one, you can use products that directly meet your little one's needs. So what are the typical skin types and how do you determine which one your baby has? Mustela has got a quick quiz to help you get to the answer. But for an overview, here's what to look for.

If your baby has supple, soft skin:

It's likely they have normal skin. If this is the case, then your baby has no visible signs of dryness or sensitivity and a perfectly smooth appearance. It's important to keep in mind that while your little one's skin may have no signs of irritations or sensitivity, baby's skin is still incredibly fragile as their full skin barrier isn't fully developed until the age of 2.

How to treat it: Mustela researchers have created a line of products using avocado extracts to treat normal skin. Check out the range here.

If your baby's skin is rough and sometimes flaky:

It's likely they have dry skin. Infants can have varying degrees of dryness - just as adults can. Dry skin is a year-round condition, but it can be exacerbated by colder temperatures. All babies aren't able to maintain proper hydration levels at this stage due to their skin barrier still developing, which is why careful hydration is so important for babies with dry skin, which can be more susceptible to damage.

How to treat it: Mustela researchers have created a line of products using avocado extracts, coconut, and almond oil to nourish dry skin. Check out the range here.

If your baby's skin easily reddens against daily stress factors:

It's likely they have very sensitive skin. Research suggests that 1 in 3 children have very sensitive skin. As opposed to other skin types, sensitive skin irritation is often in response to environmental conditions - extreme heat or cold, or exposure to minerals via hard water. Babies with this skin type are more prone to discomfort from the side effects of sensitive skin, rather than having sensitive skin itself.  For more, check out Mustela's research here.

How to treat it: Mustela researchers have created a line of products using avocado extracts and schisandra to soothe sensitive skin. Check out the range here.

If your baby's skin is extremely dry and itchy from time to time:

It's likely they have atopic-prone skin. Atopic dermatitis  - better known as eczema -  typically manifests as extremely dry patches on the skin that can become raised and red, and are usually painful and itchy.  It can be a cyclical condition, alternating between periods of discomfort and relief for your little one. It is a hereditary condition, and it's more likely for your baby to get eczema if there is a family history of it.

It can appear as early as 2 months, but Mustela research suggests early use of their Stelatopia® products has been shown to reduce dryness and associated itchiness.

How to treat it: Mustela researchers have created a line of products using avocado extracts, sunflower oil, and carnauba wax to protect and repair the skin. Check out the range here.Alongside, the specific skincare ranges Mustela do a wide range of other products and have recently launched the following:
